Single port keyhole surgery
Minimally invasive surgery is being further refined to enable certain procedures to be performed through only a single 2-3cm incision. The first Australian single port surgery to remove a kidney was performed at the Epworth Hospital in July 2009 by urologist Dr Daniel Moon. Advantages of this approach are those of standard keyhole surgery, including reduced blood loss, less post-operative pain, and quicker recovery, with the cosmetic benefit of a single small incision, hidden at the belly button.
