Robotic surgery for bladder cancer
The first robotic-assisted bladder removal in Australia was performed at the Epworth Hospital in August 2009 by urologist Dr Daniel Moon. This used the da Vinci robotic system to allow removal of a cancerous bladder via keyhole surgery. While this technique has been developed overseas, particularly in the United States, this is the first usage of robotic surgery for this indication in Australia, which provides advantages of reduced blood loss and a speedier post-operative recovery.
