New USANZ PSA policy

Associate Professor Mark Frydenberg was the primary author of the new PSA testing policy statement of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ). In summary, the statement reaffirms that there is evidence that testing with PSA can reduce death rates from prostate cancer by 31%, especially in men under 70 or with more than 7 years life expectancy. Men in their 40s are generally at very low risk of developing prostate cancer. However, if interested in their prostate health, these men could have a single PSA test to determine if they are in a higher risk group requiring closer observation, or a low risk group whereby testing only every 4-5 years may be sufficient. The statement also acknowledged that many men may be diagnosed with a low grade non-life-threatening cancer and that these men should be encouraged to simply monitor their disease, rather than having treatment that could potentially lead to unnecessary side effects.
