Inaugural National Kidney and Bladder Cancer Symposium
Melbourne Cricket Ground, 11-13 February 2010
The first national symposium on kidney and bladder cancer was convened by Mr Daniel Moon at the MCG and was well attended by specialists, nurses, and trainees from around Australia and New Zealand. The program involved a faculty of Australian urologists and oncologists with expertise in treating these diseases, in addition to invited speakers from the United States: Associate Professor Chris Wood (MD Anderson, Texas), Associate Professor Erik Castle (Mayo Clinic Arizona) and Dr Sam Bhayani (Washington School of Medicine, St Louis).
The first 2 days consisted of lectures and case discussions focusing on the advances in diagnosis and treatment of kidney and bladder cancer, along with a discussion of more controversial areas and difficult clinical scenarios. The meeting concluded on the 3rd day with Dr Sam Bhayani performing a live robotic partial nephrectomy at the Epworth hospital – the first of these procedures to be performed in Australia. The meeting was a great success and will be held again in Melbourne in April 2011.
